Box office upset alert! Let’s talk about the top two movies from the July 20-22 weekend!
But a wrench has been thrown in the works at the US Box office, in the shape of Denzel Washington. Denzel Washington proved more potent than Mamma Mia‘s all-star cast which includes none other than Cher, Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, and many more. In a rare box-office upset, Sony’s The Equalizer 2 opened at $36,011,640 compared to Universal’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again opening at $34,952,180 this past weekend.
So what happened? Some say part of Equalizer 2‘s victory is due to the fact that the R-rated action film appealed to an ethnically diverse audience.
In The Equalizer 2 Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but he must figure out how far he will go when that is someone he loves.
Conversely, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again played to a predominately female audience. The film likewise played to an older crowd with 64 percent of ticket buys over the age of 25.
In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again Sophie learns about her mother’s past while she herself is pregnant.
Mamma Mia coming in second place is by no means a failure. Instead, the surprise was the success of The Equalizer 2.
